Orthopaedic hand & wrist fellowship

In collaboration with the University of Calgary and Alberta Health Services

We are proud to present a comprehensive Fellowship in Hand, Wrist and Elbow surgery based out of the South Health Campus in Calgary, Alberta. Fellowship training is staffed by four fellowship-trained Orthopaedic hand surgeons, committed to excellence in all facets of hand surgery, from fingertip to elbow reconstruction. Fellows will gain experience in arthroscopy, arthroplasty, post-traumatic reconstruction, as well as acute presentations of a complete spectrum of elbow, wrist and hand injuries. Training includes peripheral nerve surgery encompassing decompression, repair, nerve transfers and reconstruction of nerve conditions in both upper and lower extremities. All fellows are encouraged to attend a 1-week, financially supported, course in microvascular surgery at Columbia University in New York at the start of the year to develop their skills in microscope skills, small vessel and nerve repair. Weekly academic schedules include a combination of resident/fellow teaching, city-wide combined orthopaedic and plastic surgery hand rounds and faculty run complex case presentations. Research is an integral part of the program and all fellows are expected to complete a research product during their fellowship year. The University of Calgary has a yearly fellowship research symposium at which all fellows are expected to present their completed research. All research activities are supported via research assistance through the South Health Campus Orthopaedic Research Society. Opportunities for funding, statistical review, and research assistant support are available on site. Our goal is to train academically inclined surgeons who hope to dedicate the vast majority of their practice to a high level of hand, wrist and elbow surgery.

Meet The Surgeons

Objectives

During their one year of training, fellows will be exposed to a very broad spectrum of Hand & Wrist Surgery problems, and should be able to obtain:

​

  • ​A broad knowledge of the basic sciences related to Hand Surgery, especially a detailed knowledge of the anatomy of both the hand and reconstructive tissue donor sites.

  • A working knowledge of Hand & Wrist Surgery literature

  • A comprehensive understanding of laboratory tests and investigations relevant to Hand & Wrist Surgery

  • An understanding of anaesthetic techniques relevant to hand surgery.

  • A general understanding of the principles and methods of rehabilitation and splinting (physiotherapy, occupational therapy, hand therapy, and work hardening programs) for non-surgical conditions, and after post-traumatic and reconstructive surgery

  • Specific administrative skills required for dealing with Workers’ Compensation, insurance companies, and medico legal issues, including an understanding of the principles of impairment evaluation and disability, as well as learning techniques for report compilation

Research

  • Fellows will be expected to be intimately involved in research, clinical work and teaching residents and medical students. Fellows will be expected to present and publish a research project during their fellowship

  • There are opportunities for basic science and clinical research and a project will be selected by each Fellow with the guidance of the Program Directors and Fellowship Preceptor and will be required to present at the Annual Surgical Fellows Research Symposium held yearly.

  • The Fellow’s research project will run concurrently with clinical training throughout the Fellowship.
